Rosacea is a common skin condition, in which the blood vessels below the facial skin become enlarged, lending the cheeks and nose a flushed, red appearance. Rosacea can often be mistaken for eczema, sunburn or acne, but is a completely different condition. In some cases, people with rosacea may feel that they look embarrassed or flushed all the time, and sometimes other people may presume that the patient drinks too much alcohol due to the redness of their skin.
The exact causes of rosacea are unknown, but it does have triggers that we know can worsen the condition. Rosacea can be enhanced by emotional stress, spicy foods, dairy products, alcohol consumption and smoking.
Rosacea can cause embarrassment and insecurity in sufferers, and untreated rosacea will often worsen over time, so it is pivotal that patients seek medical advice as soon as possible. Although there is no cure for rosacea, treatment can be given to relieve the symptoms, allowing for a better quality of life and a calmer, less flushed appearance.
