The grinding or clenching of the teeth is medically known as ’bruxism’, and is a very common condition. Bruxism may occur at night, or subconsciously during the day, especially whilst concentrating. Bruxism itself is not a critical medical concern however, if continued over long periods of time then it may lead to oral health problems, such as the loosening or fracturing of teeth. Additionally, it may trigger headaches, jaw pain and earaches.
People may grind their teeth for a variety of reasons, one of which is anxiety and stress. Bruxism may also be a product of sleep disorders such as Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Lifestyle factors have also been linked to teeth grinding, such as drinking excessive caffeine or alcohol, smoking, recreational drugs and certain medications.
