Verrucae, sometimes referred to as ‘plantar warts’, are warts that develop on the soles of the feet, often when a virus enters the skin through a breakage. A verruca is different to a normal wart, because it is pushed into the skin by the pressure that is exerted on the feet from standing. This may cause pain or discomfort at times, although verrucae are largely harmless.
Verrucae are often contracted in public places such as swimming pools or changing rooms, where conditions are moist and warm; perfect for promoting the replication of bacteria and viruses. People with a compromised immune system or those who are prone to developing warts and skin lesions are more likely to develop verrucae.
